The bergeronnes berry sector was identified during the years 1997-1998 as an exceptional natural environment thanks to a recognition of Saint Laurent-Vision 2000. It is part of the 37 protected sites along the St. Lawrence River. The Comité ZIP de la Rive nord de l'estuaire also recognized the value of this habitat and, in 2001-2002, carried out a characterization study that included, in addition to the Bergeronnes bays, 12 other coastal habitats of interest along the Lower Estuary Saint Laurent. Pointe Sauvage was then identified as a site with a high potential for conservation and development.
In the spring of 2004, the Comité ZIP proposed to the municipality of Bergeronnes to carry out this pre-feasibility study. The municipality then expressed a strong desire to conserve and enhance the two bays, as well as the Lac Salé and the Pointe Sauvage that they surround. In this context, the Comité ZIP and the Fondation de la faune du Québec have joined forces to carry out this study.
